Genius drummer - he also transcribed almost all of Captain Beefheart’s musical ideas during the Trout Mask Replica era to the band, no easy task. John French is a genius in his own right. Love him. His drumming on Safe as Milk and Strictly Personal also blows my mind.

Band members were like battered wives - but just employees of Beefheart. I hope one day all these men can move beyond the cult of Don ( a very skilled, shrewd, manipulative, paranoid motherfucker with an emperor complex). No one - let alone young and skillful musicians sign up for this type of abuse when they support the creator or visionary. Don needed them. They did not need Don. The fanboys will never tire of hearing these stories and praising Don the Deity.

It's great to see musicians performing with such joy and having fun on stage!

I got this box set not long after it was released. Campbell Devine did a fantastic job putting this box set together. Yeah I have most of the albums, but the bonus tracks on many of the CDs make it worthwhile. Plus, there's all the previously unreleased tracks, videos and live material. And as Ian pointed out in this interview...his career is not over. Far from it. He referenced Fingers Crossed which was released around the same time as this box set- it's very good btw- and so it wasn't possible to include it in Stranded in Reality. And then there's Defiance Part 1, which is also very good. Can't wait for Defiance Part 2.

Paul would have got so much further if he stuck to the melody rather than overusing thar annoying rising inflection in his singing, which irritates the tits off me, in my opinion.
